GUS

Hi! My Name Is GUS

I'm Available

Gus discovered food as a way to grieve the loss of his owner, and boy did he indulge.  Gus had an owner who adored him and took him everywhere, including moving into a hospice care facility. Gus faithfully lived with his master until the end.  Since there were no family members available to take over his care, Gus stayed at the facility as their "mascot" dog of sorts.  The residents LOVED him, and soon the scraps under the table became a 5-course meal, 3 times a day. It was discovered several residents were giving Gus their entire meal, and boy did he relish in all of those calories. It wasn't long before his weight ballooned to twice what it should be. He reached 106 lbs, when a healthy weight would be 50 lbs.  That's when the staff reached out to Dolly's Legacy. They knew if Gus continued to overeat at that pace, he wouldn't ultimately have a happy life.   In just the first two weeks, Gus has been increasing his daily walks and has already lost 8 lbs. His foster family is dedicated to getting him healthy and moving.  Thankfully he came into rescue before it took a serious toll on his body. His vet exam show him to be remarkably healthy despite all those extra pounds.

Gus is happy. He loves to love. Belly rubs are his second favorite thing, snacks being his first, but since he is limited on those for now, he is soaking up all the belly scratchins. He wants to please his person and will longingly look at you waiting to hear what is expected of him. He has done great with all the people and dogs he's met. He knows commands "sit", "paw", "down", and "roll over", but right now sometimes he gets stuck half way and needs a push to roll all the way. When going for a walk, he will steal the leash and take himself for a walk. He is just a gem of a dog with a soul as deep as his waist is wide. But we're working on that, and he is well on his way to becoming the slim, trim boy who chases tennis balls instead of devouring cheese balls.

✅ Medical needs: diet and exercise

✅ Not tested with cats

✅ Great couch companion for all sportsball activities - fun fact, he set the competitive eating record at his last home. He was the only one competing.
