We have a very special new addition to Dolly's Legacy, and he desperately needs all of our followers to rally around him. His name is Moe. He is the most joyous dog you will ever meet. He was surrendered to our rescue, just recently turned a year old on Valentine's Day. He was said to be a Labradoodle but he much more resembles an Irish Wolfhound-Lab. He had been taken in for neuter surgery but it was discovered he has a severe heart murmur. Imagine that, born on Valentine's Day but he has a broken heart!
Within a couple days of arriving to Dolly's Legacy, we took him to see a veterinary cardiologist who did a cardiac ultrasound to see what the culprit is. He diagnosed Moe with a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus), a birth defect in his heart. The diagnosis is both good news, and bad news.
Let's start with the good news. It is fixable. If detected in time, this is the only cardiac disease in dogs that can actually be cured. For this to happen the PDA must be closed before irreparable damage is suffered to the heart. Moe needs heart surgery.
The bad news. Left untreated, most affected animals will eventually succumb to heart failure, usually before 1-2 years of age. Moe is already a year old. Time is not on his side. He needs heart surgery, and he needs it right away. The next available date is April 17th. Waiting beyond this risks his life and the chance at fixing the defect before he goes into heart failure.
More bad news. We need to raise $4000 by April 17th in order to get his surgery done. Veterinary care is not cheap, and for rescues, it is no different. There is no discount for the procedure just because we are a rescue. Without the surgery, he will go into heart failure and not live to the age of 2. With surgery, he will go on to live a long & healthy life per the cardiologist.
